It's been a long couple days. Thursday afternoon Lara and I had an ultrasound to check the babies' biophysical condition. The concern was that Lucas wasn't growing as fast as he should. Lucas checked out fine but Andrew, once again, seemed very lethargic. The OBs consulted and decided that we should go to the hospital for increased monitoring. We get to the hospital at 5:30 PM only to find out that we're not there for monitoring but to deliver, sometime in the next 24 hours. After they hooked up the monitoring device, they decided to have the C-section in 1 hour. Basically they were both exhibiting the early signs of distress. If they were at 30 weeks then the doctors would have recommended increased monitoring and keeping them in. At 35 weeks, however, they were better off outside the womb where they could receive the care they needed.
Andrew was born butt first at 8:11PM 5 lbs., 19 inches long. Lucas was born head first a minute later 4 lbs. 6 oz., 18 inches. In the pictures Andrew appears very pale. Further testing showed that he was missing 2/3rds of his blood. Basically he had bled out to Lara (amazing that they can test for that) and that had caused him to be lethargic. He received a blood transfusion and is now a perfectly normal pink baby. Lucas is still smaller but quite feisty. As soon as he was born he grabbed the suction hose with a kung-fu grip so tight they had to pry his fingers off. Lara is doing great! She's already walking around, she's in minimal pain, and she got to see the kids first thing Friday morning. Everyone at the hospital has been great. The kiddos are in the NICU since they are a couple weeks premature but they are progressing rapidly. The should be out in a week or so. The NICU stays open 24/7 so we have ready access to them whenever we want.
Here are the pics.

Radiant Lara, you look beautiful! Congratulations and best wishes for health and happiness to the whole family. Having known you as an undergrad, hard to believe you're now a mom of two boys! That should leave you plenty of time to get back to cartooning. Two adorable new characters about to enter the rambunctious world of Crass Rat. fondly, Helaine & Blair Prentice (Berkeley)
